When I first joined IKEA Alexandra as a Kitchen planner in 2023, the whole store had just undergone a massive renovation, which included building more wheelchair friendly bathrooms and installing assistive technology at planning studios for customers and coworkers that are hard of hearing.
While these projects do improve disability inclusion capabilities, we thought it was equally as important to improve accessibility across all IKEA operations, including the room settings as well.
For this reason, a team of interior designers and I worked together to design the store's first ever disability inclusive kitchen and living room, to showcase our visitors how IKEA furniture can be designed to help and enhance the lives of persons with disabilities.
